About the Dance

Balboa is a partnered swing characterised by its close embrace, smooth footwork, and subtle yet intricate movements. Originating in Southern California during the 1920s and 1930s, it was born out of crowded dance halls where limited space needed compact dancing. The dance has two main styles: 'Pure Balboa', focused on tight connection and minimal upper-body movement, and 'Bal-Swing', which uses more open movements and dynamic turns.

Level

If you are keen to learn, you are welcome to join even if you do not have much experience if you are happy being out of your comfort zone. However, you should be comfortable with toss-outs.

What to wear?

Wear what feels comfortable and allows for easy movement. For shoes, avoid rubber soles, as they grip the floor too much, making it harder to glide and potentially straining your knees. Slick leather works best for smooth, fluid movement.
